His almost matter-of-fact descriptions of hazardous episodes and his colorful, often witty observations make this book perhaps the most delightful and absorbing adventure tale in history. Slocum writes in a fast-paced, exhilarating style. 46,000 miles and a little over 3 years later, the proof was complete: Captain Slocum had performed the epic "first" single-handedly in a trusty 34-foot sloop called the "Spray." This is Slocum's own account of his remarkable adventures during the historic voyage. "The finest single-handed adventure story yet written." - SeafarerĬhallenged by an expert who said it couldn't be done, Joshua Slocum, an indomitable New England sea captain, set out in April of 1895 to prove that a man could sail alone around the world. When I finally got a chance to get my hands on it, I was surprised that it was a legit hardcover and looked like a book on the outside rather than a graphic novel would in the comics section. His answer was that he can run over to Barnes and Noble and grab it during the rest of his errands for the day. I normally like to read ebooks but my husband has been listening to the series (as I had done) and just got Stars Above and so I asked his opinion on whether we should get the print hardcover or the ebook. I already love the series and this is written in comic form so it' s that much easier to do in just one sitting. My husband was surprised by this but I imagine that no bookish person would be. Wires and Nerve I read it in one sitting. 6/29/2023 0 Comments My name is red authorOn the third level, this is a love story. His own ability to draw stunning pictures makes Istanbul as grimly vivid as Raskolnikov's St. Pamuk not only immerses us in this debate he makes the pictures of dogs, Satan, gold coins, etc., "talk," imitating the shadow-play method of traveling storytellers. Enishte, in particular, has become enamored of the perspectival method favored by Venetian painters, and wants his artists to achieve a comparable representation of reality, rather than abiding by traditional rules of representation. In coffeehouses frequented by poets and artists, the backwash from the European Renaissance is starting to call into question fundamental principle of Islamic culture. As a murder mystery, it asks who killed a gilder named Elegant, employed by an atelier of miniaturists, and then Enishte, the man who was funding the atelier? On another level, this is a story of ideas. Set in the 16th century, at the tipping point when the Ottoman Empire was being transformed from the world's most feared superpower into an imperial backwater, Pamuk's story works on three levels. Meshing the tropes of the tavern storyteller with the recent fashion for historical mysteries (à la The Name of the RoseĪnd An Instance of the Fingerpost), Pamuk's novel could cause a sensation here, just as it did in his native Turkey. Graham’s analysis for the defensive investor is divided into primary industry sectors. Graham outlined a set of criteria that helps the investor select securities offering a minimum level of quality in terms of past performance and current financial position, as well as a minimum level of quality in terms of earnings and assets per dollar of share price. This commentary focuses on the defensive investor approach. He also suggested that aggressive investors avoid new issues. Graham believed aggressive investors could expand their universe substantially, but purchases should be attractively priced as established by intelligent analysis. Graham felt that the defensive investor should confine their holdings to the shares of important companies that are in strong financial condition with a long record of profitable operations. Since then, Tomasz has helped the Weiss family (they have an infant daughter) to hide from the Nazis, knowing that harboring Jews is punishable by death. Im SO excited about this one, I love this book I have add. A Jewish doctor, Saul Weiss, and his wife Eva helped Tomasz escape Warsaw. Hey Guys Here is the one-minute review for Kelly Rimmers second novel THE THINGS WE CANNOT SAY. When he does return, however, he tells her that when the Nazis took over Warsaw, he was conscripted to fight in the German army despite his moral objections. Over the difficult early months of the occupation, Alina never gives up hope that Tomasz will return. The Nazi troops stationed in Trzebinia confiscate farms and produce, impoverishing Alina’s family. Within weeks of his departure, the Nazis invade Poland. Before Tomasz leaves Trzebinia to study medicine in Warsaw, he promises Alina that when he returns the two will begin their life together. Growing up on a modest family farm near the small town of Trzebinia in southern Poland, Alina Dziak always knew in her heart that she would marry Tomasz Slaski, a boy from the town who dreamed of being a doctor. Third, because we are uncertain of our estimates, software managers often lack the courteous stubbornness of Antoine's chef.įourth, schedule progress is poorly monitored. Second, our estimating techniques fallaciously confuse effort with progress, hiding the assumption that men and months are interchangeable. More seriously, they reflect an unvoiced assumption which is quite untrue, i.e., that all will go well. Why is this cause of disaster so common?įirst, our techniques of estimating are poorly developed. More software projects have gone awry for lack of calendar time than for all other causes combined.
